Change in Swimming Dates

Thank you all so much for returning the swimming permission forms so quickly! If you have not yet returned your child’s form, please do so as soon as possible.

There has been a slight change in the dates for swimming due to maintenance happening at the high school swimming pool. The NEW dates for swimming will be: May 4, May 18, May 27 and June 1.

School Store

The Brown Elementary School Store is back! The School Store will be open this Friday March 11 during the school day. There will be a variety of fun school supplies that the students can buy. If your child is planning to shop, please only send them in with up to $2.00 to spend as that is the spending limit at the School Store.

Upcoming Author Visit

As part of our March is Reading Month Celebration this year, students and staff will have the opportunity to hear from author Marc Tyler Nobleman on March 9. He is a self-described "author of books for all ages, speaker, and pop culture archaeologist." His presentation centers around the power of reading and research. 

 

Homework Reminder

 

Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  This week we will be taking our Unit 4 assessment over: decimals with tenths and hundredths, place value through 1,000,000, comparing, ordering and rounding through 1,000,000 and adding and subtracting through 1,000,000. 

We will begin our next unit focusing on multiplicative comparison, measurement conversion and multi-step word problems. You can view some materials to help you support our child's learning by CLICKING HERE.

ELA: We will continue working on spotting clues in text that help us make inferences.  Then we will examine the inferences we make to draw conclusions about the text.

Writing:  We will continue work on our persuasive essay. 

Social Studies:  We will continue our study of human geography as we study the impact of immigration on culture in the United States.  We will look at how humans have adapted to, used, and modified the environment.

Science: This week we will continue creating our own "chain reaction machines" (also known as Rube Goldberg devices), adding additional steps to the ramps we designed last week. We are honing our problem-solving and engineering skills along the way!

 

Here’s something you can do at home to support your child's curiosity! Check out this video by a popular band called OK Go. They are famous for their use of Rube Goldberg machines in their music videos:

You might even want to watch the video multiple times, because there is so much going on! Pause at different steps of the chain reaction to ask: Where was the energy stored? Where did it go? (There are so many wonderful examples of energy transfer!)
