Change in Swimming Dates

Thank you all so much for returning the swimming permission forms so quickly! If you have not yet returned your child’s form, please do so as soon as possible.

There has been a slight change in the dates for swimming due to maintenance happening at the high school swimming pool. The NEW dates for swimming will be: May 4, May 18, May 27 and June 1.

Homework Reminder

 

Homework each week consists of reading 20+ minutes at home (this can be a library book, magazine, newspaper, online book, etc) and practicing multiplication and division facts 1 through 12. Mastering multiplication and division facts is vital to our learning this year.

What we are learning this week:

Math:  This week students will begin the section of our unit on measurement conversion.  Students will do the following:

• Convert from larger units to smaller units within a given system of measurement.

• Solve multi-step problems involving multiplicative comparison and measurement.

• Understand the relative sizes of kilometers, meters and centimeters, liters and milliliters, kilograms and grams, and pounds and ounces.

ELA: We will finish our study of summarizing.  We will begin our study of theme. The theme in a story is its underlying message, or 'big idea.'

Writing:  We will continue work on our persuasive essay.

Social Studies: This week we will begin our unit where we study the question: Why do we need government?  We will look at the following ideas.

• Political scientists ask questions about what governments do, how governments are organized, the values and principles connected to government, and the role of citizens in government.

• There would be many serious consequences if schools, communities, and our country tried to function without government and rules or laws.

• People institute governments for many reasons such as safety, promoting the common good, and protecting individual rights.

• The Preamble to the U.S. Constitution describes the purposes of our federal government.

 

Science:  This week, we will investigate how heat can be used to make things move. This simple idea led to the invention of steam engines and a revolution in human transportation! Students will create their own simple heat engines and test different heat sources. 

 

You can support your child’s learning by watching videos of some of the few steam locomotives still in operation (http://video.link/w/qwPd). Ask your child: how do these trains get energy to move?
